Opensolaris - How Sun Are Leveraging The Open Source Community
By tk | November 22, 2008
Solaris 10, the current version of Sun's scaleable UNIX OS, was released to the Internet in 2005 for free download and with a bunch of new technologies. The latest advances in the computing world are constantly being incorporated in new MUs of Solaris 10 released every few quarters. Some of the major features of Solaris include Dynamic Tracing to troubleshoot application problems, and the very powerful Zettabyte File System (ZFS).
Sun also set up the OpenSolaris in 2006. In the first year, the OpenSolaris community had expanded to 14,000 members with almost 30 user groups globally, coding on over 30 active projects. Although displaying a deep commitment to open-source ideals, it also provides Sun with thousands of programmers basically developers for free.
The development of Solaris demonstrates Sun Microsystems’ ability to be on the leading edge of the technology world without losing touch with the current technology environment. The OpenSolaris project is the ultimate display of these twin strengths — Sun has tapped into the creative energy of coders across the Internet and receives instant feedback about what their clients wants.
