Poker Manners and Common Decency
By Winning Chips | September 28, 2008
People play poker because it is something they enjoy doing and they enjoy playing. Texas Hold 'Em is a game of money. You should not enter a game because you need or think you are going to make money.
Never join a game because you need to win or think you are going to make big money. The fact is that most people lose money. If you need to make money you should engage in something that involves far fewer risks.
Sometimes there is a player at the table that you think maybe will make you just go completely insane. Nothing can be more aggravating than having to sit next to this person. So make sure you never act like that person.
There are certain rules to follow and things that often do or do not make sense. You have to follow the rules anyways. Well, that is if you want people left who are willing to play with you.
There are also things that you just do or don't do out of common sense. Well, that is if you want to have people left that are willing to play with you. The first rule is not to react while you are playing cards.
Do not let anyone read you at all. If you let people read you just play your cards face up. Never let anyone see your hands while a game is in play.
There may or may not be technical regulations in place. So think about it for just a minute. People will believe that you're crazy for beginners if you show your hand, and planned to stay.
You are going to look like a fool for starters! If you show your hand and planned on staying in, kiss that thought goodbye. That stunt is an automatic fold, a dead hand.
If you were planning on folding you are still going to tick someone off. This is because you can give one player an advantage over another and potentially ruin a pot for someone. If it happens by mere accident then you better say you are sorry until the sun rises.
Another ignorant and much unappreciated thing that you should never do is this, fold your hand, sit back and watch the flop. Then you realize that you would have had a good hand if you didn't fold. So you react so that everyone knows what just happened.
Again, it can potentially destroy a pot by giving some players an advantage. These are only a few rules to follow. At least be humble about what you do and that you do not want your opponents to withdraw the game because they can not play with you.
