Weight Lifting programs for Beginners, How to Start
By Ricardo d Argence | October 6, 2008
Body building can be quite confusing for a beginner. Go step-by-step. Learn first, follow the tips for intelligent body building that you learn. Don't follow the example of "body builders" whose muscles are between their ears! You'll see! You will succeed and end up in tip-top shape!
Investigate, educate yourself, and proceed with a comprehensive intelligent beginning body building plan. Jerking some weights and drinking some powdered protein are not going to make you walk out of a gym with rippling muscles. You can do it intelligently or you can look stupid. You will come out ahead if you learn to do it correctly the first time
Don't trust everything you read in magazines. Many of them are owned by nutritional supplement companies. Guess which products they'll push? Many are nothing more than glorified ads aimed at beginner body building hobbyists. Ask around and find unbiased advice. Hey, you may become such a perfect specimen that you end up on a magazine - and you won't even need a touch up!
Steroids are not the answer, so avoid that route altogether. Though steroids are a quick and easy way to build the muscle you want, the risks outweigh the results. You can stimulate muscle development naturally so you don't put your health and life in danger.
Understand how your muscles work. You build muscle by taxing it then allowing your body to repair the microscopic tears you caused. This takes time, about a week for each targeted muscle group, and patience. If you're tempted to overdo it, a common beginner mistake, it's like taking the lid off a pot of water you want to boil. It'll never happen because you keep interrupting the process.
Beginner body building injuries come from trying to lift too much weight for too long. Don't work out more than an hour a day five days a week. Go past that, and your workout's working against you. If you work efficiently, you don't have to live at the gym.
In the long run it will be easier, safer, and more effective to take body building class or hire a personal trainer in order to do it correctly. You will see quicker results if you extend to the full range of motion. Don't get sloppy. Don't rush. Time is wasted on bad form. Good form requires flexibility, concentration, and balance, all of which are good things.
