Just Three Phone Calls Later, he Landed The Job??

Networking is the backbone of any job search. Without networking, how will you ever find out about the available pharmaceutical or medical sales jobs in your area? Sure, the internet has made it so you can look for jobs in your pajamas, but I know you are going to miss out on a lot of opportunities if all you are doing is sitting in front of your computer and sending out resumes. If it was that easy, everyone would be working in this industry! I teach my candidates not only use the internet job search sites more effectively, but how to conduct a thorough job search using everything from recruiters to what I call “self-marketing.” After all, you are selling yourself, and you have to cover all your bases!

Here is just one of many ideas for “outside the box” networking that anyone can use to find their dream job in pharmaceutical or medical sales. Every medical specialty, from optometry to cardiology, has annual conventions. At these conventions, every major manufacturer of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies has a booth in the exhibit hall. Throughout the convention, doctors have an opportunity to walk through the exhibit hall to see the latest in technology and talk to their local sales representatives. The convention is a perfect place for you to meet several sales representatives and find out about many different companies, but finding out about these conventions can be tricky. Here are a few ways:

Check out the trade publications for several different specialties at the library. In these journals, you will find ads and information on upcoming conventions. Although most annual conventions are held in resort cities like Palm Springs and Orlando, nearly every medical specialty has a local state association meeting in the major metropolitan city in each state. (But don’t overlook medical conventions held in Colorado and places like Tahoe in the winter time.)

Check with local hotels in your area for any upcoming medical conventions. Conventions will only be held at large, major hotels or convention centers because medical conventions can have several hundred doctors in attendance, not to mention their spouses and/or office staff.

Ask your doctor about any upcoming conventions that they know about. While your doctor may only have limited information about conventions in their specialty, it is still a place to start.

Once you find out about the convention, you can network with the sales representatives working the booth. However, remember that they are there to work and talk to their customers, not to you. Simply introduce yourself, state that you are interested in getting into medical sales and you would like the opportunity to call them at a later date. Ask for their business card and be on your way. Do not waste the sales representative’s time by trying to give a sales pitch on yourself. If the exhibit hall is closed to outsiders, see if there is a place that you could catch sales representatives just outside of the exhibit hall.

If all else fails, this is where a good relationship with an existing pharmaceutical or medical sales representative or your doctor can pay off. Ask them to pick up business cards of all the sales representatives at the convention and pass them on to you for your database. Even if you do not call the sales representative on the card, you can always use the corporate address for the “self-marketing” campaign that I teach in my job search tool kit.

So what about those three phone calls? Well, I once was working with a candidate named Gary in a rural part of the country. He was frustrated with his job search because he never saw any jobs posted for his area. I told him about one of my favorite networking techniques but he was shocked when I told him he did not even need his computer for this one! Gary used my technique and made just three phone calls. Not only did he found out about an opening in his area on just his third call, he was actually the only person interviewing for the job and less than a month later was a pharmaceutical sales rep making over twice as much money! Some sellers do use the word “adoption” loosely as they try to trick buyers into supporting them. Before discussing the adoption process for exotic pets it is important to determine what pets are called exotics. In most areas anything other than a cat, dog, or livestock, is considered to be an exotic pet. As such rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, and so forth, are considered as exotic pets in most areas.

First you must determine whether or not you are ready to own an exotic pet. Some of the more common exotics may not have specialized needs, but others, such as reptiles and larger predators, are not simple pets for beginners and may require special permits. The next thing is to determine what kind of exotic you want, and find it. The problem with adopting many exotic animals is that they simply do not end up in animal shelters very often. Sometimes people look up animals for adoption on-line, but it should be noted here that most shelters do not have the time to keep their websites up to date with accurate information of pets available for adoption, it is always best to go and check the shelter for yourself, or to phone them.

In high school, I found Rod Stewert through MTV’s Unplugged series.  I bought the cassette and sang along with “Maggie Mae” and “Stay with Me” until I had them memorized.

In college, my girlfriend and I said we would like to go to a Rod Stewart concert some day – but it was all talk.  We would probably never go.

At age 30, I decided to create my 100 Things to do Before I Die list and Rod made the list.  When I upgraded my phone, I added “Hot Legs” as my ringtone.  I really wanted “Stay with Me” but couldn’t find it.  I was a Rod fan, but I was a little worried about fulfilling this one because Rod was getting a little old – in his 60s.  How much touring could he have left?

In early 2006, I heard a promo for a Rod Stewart concert coming to St. Louis.  I couldn’t believe my luck.  I knew this was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity – I was going to check this one off my list.

One of my friends owed me a concert because we had gone to Poison with her.  My other friend was in as well.  The day of the concert I was so excited – all my kids at school knew I was going – but then I got a phone call.  I couldn’t believe it – Rod was sick.  The concert was being postponed.  Just my luck.  It was a total let down.

The reschedule was a few weeks later, and I was ready to go again.  We were dolled up and ready to go (I though I was looking pretty good.).  We ate downtown at Maggie O’s, which took longer than expected.  I was beginning to panic.  My friends wanted to wait on a trolley, but there was only 15 minutes to the show and there was no opening act.  I decided, with or without them, I was high-tailing it to the ScottTrade Center.

We made it with a few minutes to spare, but my smoker friends wanted to have one last drag before we went in.  I wasn’t going to miss anything, so I decided I was going in alone.  I was a little pissed off, but I could deal with it.  I went in search of my “cheap” dollar seats by myself.

I was seated next to what I would call an elderly woman.  I was too optimistic how “into” the concert she would be.  I was actually wondering why she was there, but then I realized that she was probably near the same age as Rod.

They seemed to be running a little behind schedule, so my friends weren’t late in finding our seats.  Except they weren’t coming up to meet me, they were waving me down to them.  What now?  They were all excited.  Because the concert was rescheduled, they were extra floor seats and my friends had nabbed three floor seats.  WE WERE GOING DOWN!!!  I quickly forgave them for needing to smoke. 

We found our seats as the lights went down and they were great.  It was a concert in the round, so Rod just wondered the stage and he did so for 3 hours.  This 60 something guy went all out for 3 hours.  I was in heaven.  There were sexy backup singers, costume changes, family pictures on the big screen, soccer balls – It was an all out performance.

Rod played all my favorites and my friends managed to drag me down to edge of the stage for “Hot Legs.”  I WAS FRONT STAGE FOR HOT LEGS!  What more could I ask for?

Overall it was a great evening and money well spent – even the t-shirt.  My two friends who weren’t two keen on going were pleasantly surprised.  I would go back any time.  I’m just glad I got to mark one more thing off of my “Before I Die List” or in this case before Rod dies.  If you get the chance, you should check out Sexy Rod too.  I’m waiting for the next time he hits town again because I’d love to see him again.

After you’ve spent some time on the site, register and write a few book reviews of your own. This will be good practice in the art of writing a good book review. At first I was quite excited about this site until I discovered, it can be quite difficult to get the maximum earnings for your review. They list a current pay rate for reviews on their home page. If their criteria aren’t met, you get paid the “bulk” rate which is the regular rate divided by 5. Since the regular rate is currently .50, the bulk rate would be .30. Not exactly a strong motivator to write reviews for them. PLUS, you don’t get paid until you reach their minimum payout criteria of .00. If you can somehow manage to write your reviews in such a way to meet all their criteria, this site might have some potential for making money. As it stands right now, it’s a bit of a challenge.

A more promising site is a website called Shvoong at http://www.shvoong.com. It allows you to write abstracts of books, articles, websites, and more. In turn, you get paid 10% of the advertising revenues your abstracts generate.The minimum payout here is more reasonable at .00. Keep in mind it can take alot of abstracts to generate a significant amount of revenue from this site. The site requires each abstract to be from 300 to 900 words in length. if you happen to be able to read and write in another language, you can use your translation skills to earn even more money. Shvoong will pay you 5% of the advertising revenues generated from any abstract you translate into your target language.

Probably one of the more lucrative ways to get paid for writing book reviews is writing reviews for your own website or blog. You can generate revenue one of two ways:

1. By signing up with Google adsense. They give you code to place on your website or blog which will display Google ads targeted to the topic you’re writing about. Each time an ad is clicked, you receive a portion of the revenue.

2. By signing up with Clickbank to receive commissions through marketing their affiliate programs. You can include links to specific products that relate to the product you’re reviewing in your review. If someone clicks on that link and purchases the product, you receive a commission which can be 50% or higher on digital products.

Workers compensation insurance covers workers injured or ill due to occupation related activities. The compensation scheme ensures prompt and fair protection by channelling the necessary insurance benefits.

It goes on to promote the rehabilitation of workers and their families, thus it generally aims to guarantee the workers’ welfare regarding safety and health.

In a number of cases the government is in charge of paying the insurance benefit, simply called employment insurance or labor insurance. Essentially, it aims to provide a benefit if an accident happens to the insured. There may be a benefit provided for hospitalization, permanent disability or death.

A number of events are covered and these include (variations exist by country or program); wound infection, poisoning from use/ingestion of poisoned food, drink or other substances, diseases caused by involuntary fall into water or other liquid or attempt to save human or animal.

Drowning, suffocation, freezing, heat stroke, sprain, dislocation, muscle rupture, complications and exacerbations after an accident resulting from first aid or medical treatment.

The consequences of an accident to be insured are laid out in four separate sections. The insured can choose within limits, the required sum assured per section.

Category A provides for a lump sum at death, category B provides a lump sum for permanent disability. The amount of benefit depends on the degree of disability. Category C provides a periodic payment of temporary disability, and Category D provides daily allowances for hospitalization.

Workers are entitled to disability compensation pension or invalidity pension, first degree disability will be grounds for such compensation. As long as you are unable to physically carry out your duties, or require occasional nursing care, compensation will be paid while receiving the care.

Special allowance will be paid in addition to insurance benefits, in the form of invalidity special payment, invalidity special pension, special disability pension, special payment survivor and special survivor annuity. As well as child care assistance costs covering various needs such as school fees, and rehabilitation for treatment of victims of industrial accidents.

If a worker dies due to work or commuting accidents, survivors eligible for the pensions are paid lump-sum payment. Insurance events are divided into three sections, that is, workers injured or killed at work, workers injured or killed while commuting and other secondary benefits such as health related complications.

Industrial accident insurance benefits are outlined as medical benefits, disability benefits, survivor benefit, funeral benefits, injury benefit and care benefit.

During the past years, numerous workers have experienced both the mild and grave injuries; some became disabled, and others have lost their lives. This just indicates that there is a need to use the best forms of precautionary measures to avoid such unwelcome incidents.

By creating a strict sense of awareness, numerous injuries and fatal accidents can be prevented.
